Cafés, perhaps more than any other institution, stand for communication and local culture. They are a symbol of our common European heritage.
In 27 Cafés d’Europe, in 27 European capitals, coffeehouse discussions will take place with the public and young people from all over Europe. Questions will be asked, ideas aired, creative and visionary approaches proposed. The core issue is the diversity and colourful nature of the European Union.
People will also be writing in the Café d’Europe – writers and members of the public will write the ‘Stories of Europe’ in 27 European capitals.
Jiří Gruša, the President of International PEN, has composed a text “Temptress Europe” especially for the occasion. This theme will be taken up by all the writers and members of the public in the coffeehouses and individually interpreted in a variety of ways.
On 9 May, the Stories of Europe will be written in cafés from Dublin to Athens, from Paris to Riga. The contributions will subsequently be compiled and published in a book.
