Location:
Tyrol is in western Austria. It borders on Germany in the north, Italy in the south and Switzerland in the south-west. The most densely populated part is the Inn valley. The River Inn flows through Tyrol from the south-west to the north-east. There are important transit routes across the Alps through Tyrol, such as the Brenner motorway.
History:
The province of Tyrol experienced its biggest expansion between 1258 and 1295 under Count Meinhard II. The territories to the south and north of the Brenner Pass were united to form the County of Tyrol, the “Land in the mountains”.
The Habsburgs acquired Tyrol in 1363, as a result of which it became part of the Austrian succession. It continued to belong to Austria except for a short period of Bavarian rule from 1805 until the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
Tyrol was divided in three in 1919 after the First World War: the Austrian Bundesland of Tyrol, the Italian Autonomous Province of Bozen (South Tyrol) and the Italian Autonomous Province of Trento.
